Battle of France and Dunkirk Evacuation

May–June 1940 CE

Germany attacked the Low Countries and France in May 1940, drawing Allied armies north while armoured forces broke through the Ardennes and reached the Channel. The British Expeditionary Force and allied units were cut off in northern France and Belgium.

Operation Dynamo evacuated hundreds of thousands of troops from Dunkirk, but the campaign ended in the fall of France and the loss of immense quantities of equipment. Survivors returned to Britain expecting invasion.
