Jackman’s section joins ARVN troops and the US 25th Infantry Division in a drive into the Hat Dịch region and the Suối Đá River valley. The allied force intends to dismantle Viet Cong bases and supply routes, but ambushes, artillery fire and the arrival of North Vietnamese reinforcements turn the offensive into a prolonged test of cohesion. The men must continue advancing while casualties and uncertainty erode the confidence with which the operation began.

The novel broadens the series from a predominantly Australian perspective to a genuinely multinational campaign. Its central theme is military brotherhood across different armies, languages and command systems, showing how practical trust is forged under fire even when political objectives and operational doctrines do not fully align.
