Book
Siege of Heaven
First published 2006
In August 1098, the survivors of the First Crusade remain divided by disputes over Antioch and the spoils of conquest. Demetrios Askiates wants to abandon the expedition and return to Constantinople, but a diplomatic mission intended to secure an alliance with the Fatimid rulers of Egypt ends in ambush and draws him deeper into the struggle among crusader princes, Byzantine interests and regional powers.
Travelling from plague-stricken Antioch through Egypt and the Levant, Demetrios follows the army towards Jerusalem while uncovering the ambitions concealed beneath its religious purpose. The final approach to the Holy City confronts him with siege warfare, political betrayal and the prospect of mass violence, bringing the trilogy to the capture of Jerusalem in 1099.
