Quest for Lost Heroes

by David Gemmel Book 4 in the Drenai series.

When raiders enslave Ravenna and others from a Gothir settlement, the young farmer Kiall refuses to accept their loss. His pursuit carries him towards the Nadir steppes, a region controlled by warriors, slavers and powers far beyond his experience.

Kiall gains the help of Chareos, Beltzer, Finn and Maggrig, veterans once celebrated as the heroes of Bel-azar. Age and disappointment have separated them, but the rescue gives them one final cause. Their journey through war and supernatural danger tests whether old legends can recover the purpose that first made them heroes.

The older warriors are important because the story questions what remains after heroic reputation has faded. Chareos and his companions are no longer the men celebrated in songs, while Kiall’s idealism forces them to confront the distance between legend and memory. The rescue becomes a second test of courage in which age, regret and loyalty matter as much as the martial skill that first made them famous.
