Battle of Okinawa
1 April–22 June 1945
United States forces landed on Okinawa on 1 April 1945 to secure airfields and an anchorage close to the Japanese home islands. Japanese troops under Mitsuru Ushijima avoided an immediate defence of the beaches and occupied deeply fortified positions in the south.
The campaign developed into prolonged ground fighting supported by intense naval and air operations, including mass kamikaze attacks. Organised Japanese resistance ended in late June after catastrophic losses among soldiers and Okinawan civilians.
