Kristin Hannah writes popular historical fiction with strong emotional arcs, family relationships and women’s experiences in crisis.
Kristin Hannah was born in California in 1960 and later settled in the Pacific Northwest. She studied law and worked as a lawyer before becoming a novelist. Hannah began writing during a period when she and her mother were working together on a story, and after several years of development and rejection she published her first novel in 1991. Her early career concentrated largely on contemporary relationships and family conflict.
Hannah later moved toward historical fiction with novels that place women’s endurance at the centre of national crises. The Nightingale follows two sisters in occupied France who respond differently to resistance, survival and collaboration. The Four Winds depicts migration and labour hardship during the Dust Bowl, while The Women focuses on an American Army nurse during the Vietnam War and on the difficult return home. The Great Alone, although primarily a family novel, also evokes the social aftermath of Vietnam in 1970s Alaska. Hannah’s work emphasises emotional consequence, domestic responsibility and experiences that conventional military narratives often marginalise. She is most suitable for readers who want history approached through family bonds and women’s wartime service.
