Francis Andrews betrays the smuggling crew commanded by Carlyon, the man who raised him after his father’s death. A customs officer is killed during the attempted seizure, and Andrews flees across the Sussex countryside knowing that both the smugglers and the authorities regard him as a coward and traitor.
He takes refuge with the isolated Elizabeth, who persuades him to testify at the Lewes Assizes. Andrews hopes that legal truth will free him from Carlyon’s influence, but the trial exposes the moral compromises of every side. Set in nineteenth-century Sussex, Greene’s first novel combines smuggling adventure with a psychological study of guilt, dependence and betrayal.
