Travels with My Aunt

Retired bank manager Henry Pulling meets his elderly Aunt Augusta at his mother’s funeral and is drawn into a life entirely unlike his quiet existence cultivating dahlias. Augusta’s stories of lovers, smuggling and international travel may be exaggerated, but the police and criminals surrounding her suggest that much of what she says is true.
Their journeys through Europe and beyond force Henry to abandon the moral categories and routines that have protected him from experience. A search for Augusta’s former lover leads towards Paraguay, where family history and criminal opportunity converge. The comic novel treats travel as a gradual acceptance of uncertainty, ageing and unconventional loyalty.
