Aoife MacMurchada is fourteen when her father, Diarmait, is driven from Leinster and takes his family into exile. His search for military support leads from Henry II to the Marcher lord Richard de Clare, who is promised Irish lands and Aoife’s hand in return for helping to recover the kingdom.

The novel follows invasion, sea crossings and contested lordship through a young woman who must reconcile loyalty to her father and country with marriage to the foreign commander known as Strongbow.
