Julian Lawndsley leaves a City career to open a bookshop in an English seaside town. Edward Avon, a cultivated Polish émigré living nearby, befriends him and takes an unusual interest in the shop.

In London, a senior intelligence officer investigates a long-running security breach connected to Edward's past. The two stories converge around divided loyalties, family secrecy and the possibility that a respected former servant of the state has been living by a different moral code.

The security question turns on the ambiguous morality of intelligence service. Edward's past contains loyalties formed under pressures that institutional rules cannot fully explain, while Julian's distance from espionage makes him an unwitting observer rather than a trained investigator. The novel asks whether betrayal can be judged cleanly when states themselves depend on secrecy, compromise and relationships that outlast official assignments.
