Heather Morris is a New Zealand-born author who lives in Australia and is best known for historical novels based on accounts of survival during the Second World War. Before becoming a novelist, she worked in a hospital in Melbourne, where she was introduced to Holocaust survivor Lale Sokolov in 2003. Over several years, she recorded his memories of imprisonment at Auschwitz-Birkenau, forming the basis of her internationally bestselling debut, The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Morris continued Lale’s story in Cilka’s Journey and later wrote Three Sisters, inspired by Slovakian sisters who survived Auschwitz and rebuilt their lives after the war. Her other novels include Sisters Under the Rising Sun, about women imprisoned by the Japanese during the Second World War. Her fiction concentrates on resilience, friendship and hope, using testimony and documented events to reconstruct the experiences of people caught within persecution, imprisonment and conflict.
