Thomas Chaloner

The Thomas Chaloner mysteries follow a former Commonwealth intelligencer attempting to survive after the restoration of Charles II. Employed by the Earl of Clarendon, Chaloner works inside a court that distrusts his Parliamentarian past, investigating murder, corruption and political conspiracy in London during the first turbulent years of the restored monarchy.

The series moves through Whitehall, the Tower, financial districts, prisons, coffee houses and riverside communities as England faces religious unrest, espionage, war with the Dutch, the Great Plague and the approach of the Great Fire. Chaloner's experience abroad and his scepticism about official explanations make him a capable investigator, but each case forces him to navigate divided loyalties and a government in which intelligence can be as dangerous as treason.
