Book
Blood of the Warlord
The original Warlord and the generations immediately after him are dead, their service to successive kings having cost the family heavily. Henry III nevertheless turns again to the same bloodline, asking Sir Henry Samuel, Sir Alfred and the newly knighted Sir Thomas to accompany his son Edward and help shape the prince into a ruler capable of defending Plantagenet interests.
Their mission takes them away from the familiar northern borderlands into Gascony, where insurrection and treason threaten English authority. The younger knights must rely on inherited traditions without simply repeating the sacrifices of their ancestors. The novel shifts the family story toward a new generation and the emerging career of the future Edward I.
