Battle of Sedgemoor

The Battle of Sedgemoor was fought in July 1685 in Somerset. Monmouth’s poorly equipped rebel force attempted a night attack but was defeated by the royal army. It was the last major pitched battle fought on English soil.

Sedgemoor mattered because it ended Monmouth’s claim and allowed James II to punish rebellion severely. The battle was followed by executions, transportation and the Bloody Assizes. It became a memory of both failed resistance and state vengeance.

Sedgemoor is useful for historical novels about dissenting communities, West Country rebellion and the late Stuart succession crisis. It suits fiction about ordinary rebels, royal officers, frightened families, fugitives and the moral aftermath of defeat.
