Girolamo Savonarola was a Dominican friar whose preaching against corruption and luxury made him a dominant political and religious figure in Florence after the Medici expulsion of 1494. His conflict with Pope Alexander VI and the Florentine elite ended with his arrest, execution and burning in 1498.
