Cesare Aldo Series

D. V. Bishop’s Cesare Aldo series follows a former soldier serving Florence’s feared criminal court during the first years of Medici ducal rule. Beginning in the winter of 1536, Aldo investigates murders that expose the city’s convents, merchant families, religious factions and governing elite. His work repeatedly brings him into conflict with ambitious colleagues and powerful patrons, while the relationships he must conceal leave him vulnerable to prosecution and political blackmail. Constable Carlo Strocchi develops from a subordinate investigator into an essential ally whose methods and loyalties sometimes challenge Aldo’s own.

Across six novels, the series moves from Florence under Alessandro de’ Medici into the early reign of Cosimo I, with later investigations extending into the Tuscan countryside, Venice and a remote institution in the hills. Each mystery can be read as a separate case, but the books form a continuing account of Aldo’s private history, professional reversals and struggle to survive within an authoritarian legal system. The series combines historical mystery and thriller plotting with Renaissance politics, religious conflict, social hierarchy and the precarious position of people whose identities place them outside accepted public life.
