Ranjit Singh
1780–1839
Ranjit Singh was the founder of the Sikh Empire in the Punjab. He united competing Sikh misls, captured Lahore, expanded across the Punjab and built a disciplined army while balancing relations with Afghans, local rulers and the British.
In non-fiction, Ranjit Singh is discussed in Amarpal Singh’s The First Anglo-Sikh War and Amarpal Singh’s The Second Anglo-Sikh War. In Amarpal Singh’s The First Anglo-Sikh War, Amarpal Singh reconstructs the crisis that followed the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and brought the Sikh Empire into war with the East India Company in December 1845.
