Victoria and Prince Albert enter marriage with affection but very different expectations of authority. As reigning queen, Victoria is determined to protect her constitutional position and resists attempts by her husband to shape political business, while Albert struggles to find a useful role in a court where rank does not automatically give him formal power.

Successive pregnancies, court disputes and ministerial politics gradually change the balance between them. Albert’s influence grows through administration, reform and family responsibility, but the marriage never ceases to contain tensions between Victoria’s sovereignty and Victorian assumptions about a husband’s place in the household. The novel follows that partnership from youthful passion toward the political and domestic collaboration that defined the early reign.
