Liberation of the Netherlands and Rhine Campaign

1944–1945 CE

After the Normandy campaign, Allied armies advanced into Belgium and the Netherlands but faced flooded ground, fortified villages and determined German resistance. Operations to clear the Scheldt and secure approaches to Antwerp were followed by winter fighting along the Maas.

In early 1945 Allied forces attacked through the Reichswald and Rhineland before crossing the Rhine into Germany. The fighting combined artillery, armour and infantry in forests, towns and prepared defensive positions.
