German Occupation and Resistance in Milan, 1943–1945

Italy announced its armistice with the Allies on 8 September 1943. German forces rapidly occupied northern and central Italy, while Benito Mussolini headed the German-backed Italian Social Republic. Milan became a major centre of Nazi-Fascist administration, surveillance and anti-Jewish persecution.

German authorities carried out arrests and deportations from Milan, while clandestine resistance took many forms: partisan organisation, factory strikes, intelligence, shelter, document forgery and the work of staffette who carried messages and supplies. On 25 April 1945, the Milan resistance proclaimed a general insurrection against German occupation and Fascist rule.

The Italian Photographer places Eva Cantoni’s forged identity photographs and Claudia’s courier work inside this urban resistance environment. Its use of a fashion studio as clandestine infrastructure shows how ordinary professions and domestic connections could be redirected towards rescue and resistance.
