The Thomas Hawkins series follows a disgraced clergyman’s son and reluctant investigator through the criminal, political and imperial worlds of early Georgian Britain. Between 1727 and 1728, Hawkins and bookseller Kitty Sparks confront the Marshalsea debtors’ prison, the violence of the Bloody Code, court intrigue surrounding Queen Caroline, the aftermath of the South Sea Bubble and wealth built through Atlantic slavery.

The four novels combine murder investigations with a continuing story of loyalty, independence and survival. Documented people and institutions appear alongside fictional conspiracies, allowing the series to move from London prisons and royal apartments to Studley Royal and the British Caribbean. The books are arranged in both publication and narrative order.
