Maximinus Thrax

Maximinus Thrax was Roman emperor from 235 to 238 and the first ruler generally understood to have risen to the throne primarily through a career in the army rather than through senatorial or dynastic standing. Ancient sources emphasise his provincial origins and extraordinary physical size, though their anecdotes are often hostile and exaggerated. He was proclaimed emperor by troops on the Rhine after the murder of Severus Alexander and immediately concentrated on campaigning against Germanic peoples beyond the frontier.

His reign depended heavily on military support and on the taxation needed to sustain large frontier armies, policies that deepened hostility among senatorial elites and provincial landowners. In 238 a revolt in Africa elevated the Gordians, while the Senate declared Maximinus an enemy and backed rival emperors. Maximinus marched into Italy but was stalled while besieging Aquileia. With supplies failing and morale collapsing, soldiers in his own force killed him and his son, ending a reign that helped expose the political instability of the third-century empire.

In Harry Sidebottom’s Blood and Steel, in AD 238 opposition to Maximinus Thrax turns into open revolt. Landowners and officials in Roman Africa proclaim the elderly Gordian I and his son Gordian II as emperors, forcing the Senate to decide whether to support them or submit to the soldier-emperor marching towards Italy. In Harry Sidebottom’s Fire and Sword, after the defeat of the Gordians, the Senate appoints Pupienus and Balbinus, while Maximinus Thrax advances into Italy and the young Gordian III becomes the focus of popular and dynastic hopes. In Harry Sidebottom’s Iron and Rust, the army raises Maximinus Thrax in their place, giving the empire a ruler whose authority rests on military success rather than senatorial acceptance or dynastic legitimacy.
