Blondel de Nesle

Blondel de Nesle was a northern French trouvère active in the late twelfth century, associated with the aristocratic song culture that adapted the ideals of courtly love into Old French lyric. Around twenty surviving songs are attributed to him with varying degrees of confidence, and his work circulated widely enough to influence later composers and manuscript traditions. The details of his family background and exact lifespan remain uncertain, so he is more securely understood through his surviving musical-poetic corpus than through a continuous biography.

Blondel’s later fame rests on a story that is almost certainly legendary. Medieval and early modern retellings claimed that, after Richard I of England was imprisoned on his return from crusade, Blondel wandered from castle to castle singing a song known only to the king until Richard answered from captivity. The tale is not supported by contemporary evidence and developed after the events, but it became one of the enduring legends of Richard the Lionheart, turning an identifiable trouvère into the model of the loyal minstrel who discovers his imprisoned lord.

Gore Vidal’s A Search for the King turns the later legend of Blondel into an adventure, sending the troubadour across Europe with his page Karl to locate the missing Richard I by singing a song the captive king might recognise. David Boyle’s Blondel’s Song approaches the same tradition from the opposite direction, separating the famous story from what can actually be recovered about Richard’s capture, imprisonment, ransom and the political bargaining surrounding his return. Read together, the two books show why Blondel survives so strongly in cultural memory: the historical troubadour is elusive, but the legend provides an irresistible human image of loyalty cutting through the dynastic diplomacy of the Third Crusade’s aftermath.
