Annie Oakley
1860–1926
Annie Oakley was an American exhibition shooter whose skill made her one of the best-known performers in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Her international performances challenged assumptions about women’s abilities while helping turn frontier marksmanship into mass entertainment and a durable element of western mythology.
Born Phoebe Ann Mosey in Ohio, Oakley developed her shooting skills while hunting to support her family and later defeated the professional marksman Frank Butler, whom she married. She joined Buffalo Bill’s show in the 1880s and toured across the United States and Europe, performing before huge audiences and advocating firearms training for women while carefully cultivating a respectable public image.
