Buffalo Bill’s Wild West

William F. Cody launched Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in 1883. The touring production combined marksmanship, riding, staged attacks, military displays and presentations by Indigenous performers, cowboys and international horsemen under the banner of the Congress of Rough Riders of the World.

The show toured the United States and Europe, helping to standardise popular images of frontier settlement and conflict. It offered employment and public visibility to many performers while presenting conquest and Indigenous dispossession through a commercial narrative shaped for paying audiences.

Later fiction can examine the difference between western history and the mythology produced by entertainment. The Congress of Rough Riders follows an English family whose connection to Cody becomes a burden of inheritance and a proposal to revive the spectacle.
