Mongol Successor Khanates

As the Mongol Empire divided among branches of the descendants of Chinggis Khan, several regional khanates developed into increasingly distinct political states. These successor polities retained Mongol dynastic traditions while governing very different populations across the Eurasian steppe, Central Asia, Persia and neighbouring regions.

This context provides an organizational parent for long-lived successor states such as the Golden Horde. It distinguishes those regional khanates from the earlier period in which the Mongol conquests were directed through a more unified imperial structure.
