Legendary Iron Age setting; medieval literary tradition
The Fenian Cycle, also called the Fiannaíocht, gathers stories about Fionn mac Cumhaill, his family and the Fianna, a roaming company of hunters and warriors. Its tales combine martial exploits, hunting, kingship, poetry, supernatural encounters and the obligations that bind a warrior fellowship.
The surviving tradition developed through medieval Irish manuscripts and a long history of oral storytelling. Important figures include Oisín, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, Gráinne and Fionn’s rivals and companions.
