Scottish Highlands and Islands in the Post-war Era
1945–1991
After 1945, many Highland and island communities continued to experience out-migration, limited employment and dependence on farming, fishing or estate work. Road, ferry and air connections improved, but remoteness still shaped access to services and the rhythms of daily life.
Tourism, holiday cottages and changing patterns of landownership brought new income while also placing pressure on housing and local traditions. Visitors often encountered landscapes that appeared isolated but were closely connected to national economic and cultural change.
Wildfire at Midnight and Stormy Petrel use this post-war setting for closed-circle suspense. Weather, sea crossings, sparse settlement and the uncertain status of outsiders make the Highlands and islands integral to the action rather than decorative scenery.
