Trail of Tears examines the forced removal of the Cherokee from the southeastern United States during the 1830s. It traces land hunger, Georgia’s challenge to Cherokee sovereignty, federal policy under Andrew Jackson and the disputed Treaty of New Echota.
The book follows detention, the westward journey and the disease, hunger and death suffered along the routes to Indian Territory. It also considers resistance, the survival of the Eastern Band and the political rebuilding of Cherokee communities after removal.
