The Seminole Wars surveys the conflicts fought in Florida between the United States and Seminole communities during the first half of the nineteenth century. It explains the borderland created by Spanish rule, Native migration, maroon communities and American efforts to recover escaped enslaved people.
The book follows Andrew Jackson’s invasion, the removal policy that produced the Second Seminole War and the difficult fighting in swamps and forests. It also examines resistance under leaders such as Osceola and the survival of Seminole communities that avoided complete removal.
