The Winter Garden
In the present day, violinist Lucy Brown arrives at an old property carrying family memories she does not fully understand. The house’s winter garden opens a connection to the early seventeenth century and to the world of Robert and Catherine Catesby as the Gunpowder Plot gathers momentum. Cornick interweaves the two periods through love, secrecy and inherited trauma, showing how a conspiracy remembered as national history also destroys private lives.
The dual chronology makes inherited memory part of the mystery. Objects, family stories and the physical garden preserve fragments of the earlier household, but they do not explain themselves. Lucy has to distinguish what descendants chose to remember from what political danger forced them to conceal, turning the Gunpowder Plot into a history transmitted through private loss as well as public records.
