The Two Noble Kinsmen

The Theban cousins Palamon and Arcite are captured after battle and imprisoned in Athens, where both see Emilia and immediately become rivals for her love. Their friendship gives way to competition, escape and eventually a formal tournament sanctioned by Theseus.
Written collaboratively by Shakespeare and John Fletcher, the play draws on the story of the Knight’s Tale while placing its romance within the world of Greek heroic legend. The final outcome is shaped by competing prayers, accident and political arrangement, making love less a reward for individual choice than something governed by fortune, honour and social authority.
