The Tournament of Blood
First published 2001
Okehampton, spring 1322. A tournament is being built around display, gambling and noble rivalry when the moneylender financing it is beaten to death. The carpenter responsible for the stands is then killed in the same manner, suggesting that the violence outside the lists has its own deliberate pattern.
Baldwin and Simon investigate among knights, servants, craftsmen and creditors as the tournament continues. The case examines the money required to stage chivalric spectacle and the grievances hidden beneath public honour, where a controlled contest can provide both motive and camouflage for murder.
