After a mine collapse kills his brother and nearly kills him, Judd Markley leaves West Virginia rather than enter another coal shaft. In 1954 he finds work with a timber company in prosperous Myrtle Beach, where the open coast seems to offer the opposite of the darkness and confinement he has escaped. Larkin Heyward, the owner’s daughter, is equally restless, imagining a vocation serving children in the Appalachian mountains.
Their attraction grows despite incompatible plans and the expectations attached to Larkin’s family and Judd’s class. Hurricane Hazel then tears through the Carolina coast, replacing private uncertainty with destruction and relief work. The historical storm allows the novel to connect coal-country trauma, coastal development and charitable idealism, asking whether love should redirect a calling or make its demands more honest.
