Appalachian Serenade

Newly widowed Delilah Morrissey leaves Chicago for her sister’s home in Wise, West Virginia, carrying a grief made sharper by the apparent loss of her hope for motherhood. Returning to an Appalachian community she once knew does not offer an easy restoration: she must accept dependence, reconsider the future she had imagined and decide whether a different form of family can still be hers.

As the prequel to Appalachian Blessings, the novella establishes Wise in the 1950s and introduces the Phillips family and the series’ blend of domestic history, romance and understated wonder. Delilah’s renewed connection with Robert Thornton turns a private story of bereavement into an exploration of faith, belonging and the courage required to exchange an old dream for a possible new one.
