Granada, in the final years of Muslim rule. English physician Thomas Berrington is summoned to the Alhambra after a series of killings unsettles the Nasrid court. The murder of one of the sultan’s wives turns the investigation into a matter of dynastic security and places Thomas among rival factions whose interests depend on what he discovers.
Assisted by Jorge, a eunuch with intimate knowledge of the palace, Thomas follows evidence through guarded chambers and competing court households. The closer they come to the killer, the more the case becomes entangled with political ambition and private vengeance in a kingdom already under pressure from the Christian powers beyond Granada.
