Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, searches for a modern scholar capable of hearing the life preserved in her letters. From her education at the court of Ferrara to her marriage with Francesco Gonzaga, she reconstructs the ambitions, rivalries and compromises behind the image of a celebrated Renaissance patron. Her correspondence becomes a record of a woman determined to define her own authority.

Isabella commissions artists, builds collections and governs during her husband’s absences while the Italian Wars repeatedly endanger Mantua and her family. Diplomacy requires her to negotiate with popes, French kings, imperial commanders and the Borgias without surrendering her cultural ambitions. The novel joins biography with an archival frame to examine how reputation is created, edited and inherited.
