Bombay, 1857. Honourably discharged and intending to return to England, Jack Lark is diverted by a promise to escort Aamira away from danger. Their journey carries them to Delhi just as rebellion erupts across northern India, trapping them in a city where military mutiny rapidly becomes a wider struggle and civilians are caught between rival forces.
The novel places Jack within the Indian Rebellion of 1857, including the violent contest for Delhi and the cycle of massacre and reprisal that marked the uprising. No longer bound to the army by rank, he must decide whether being a soldier is something he can truly abandon when people around him need the skills that war has given him.
