Runolf leaves Orkney in search of adventure and attaches himself to men whose reputation promises wealth and honour. Their voyages reveal a late Viking world in which raiding survives beside trade, royal government and Christian authority. The sword and fellowship he admires are gradually exposed as instruments of ambition and exploitation.

Treece turns the journey into a story of moral as well as physical survival. Runolf must decide which loyalties deserve obedience when courage is used to excuse cruelty and old customs no longer provide stable rules. The novel’s fragmented weapon becomes a symbol of an heroic tradition losing both its power and its integrity.
