The Viking Series

The Viking Series consists of two independent historical adventures connected by the last phase of Scandinavian expansion. The Story of the Vikings, originally published as The Last of the Vikings, follows Harald Hardrada from his return to Scandinavia through the struggle for Norway and his final invasion of England. Horned Helmet turns to the Jomsvikings, a legendary brotherhood whose discipline and violence bind its members to a world of raiding and political rivalry.

The books are not a continuous narrative and use different protagonists, but both examine warrior loyalty at the point where the older Viking order is being absorbed into Christian monarchy and territorial kingdoms. Treece places heroic reputation beside the practical costs of ambition, showing how codes of fellowship can inspire courage while also demanding destructive obedience.
