Roman Britain

The Roman Britain series presents the island at three moments of political rupture. Legions of the Eagle begins with Claudius’s invasion and the resistance associated with Caratacus. The Eagles Have Flown moves to the fifth century, when the legions and central government have disappeared. The Queen’s Brooch returns to the first century for Boudica’s revolt.

The publication sequence therefore differs from historical chronology. Across the three books, young protagonists are raised between cultures and must decide whether military service, local loyalty or personal conscience should guide them. Roman roads, weapons and titles offer order, but Treece repeatedly shows how imperial power depends on coercion and how quickly its structures can collapse.
