During the American Civil War, London arms dealer Daniel Alberton becomes involved in the profitable but morally fraught trade supplying weapons to the Confederacy. His daughter’s attachment to a Confederate officer brings the conflict directly into the household just as business rivalries and political sympathies sharpen around them.
When Alberton is murdered, the young Confederate becomes the obvious suspect. William and Hester Monk follow the case across the Atlantic and back again, trying to establish whether the killing arose from love, money or the international arms trade.
