English colonists arrive at Roanoke with inadequate supplies, divided leadership and assumptions about the land and its Indigenous inhabitants that quickly prove dangerous. Hunt uses surviving clues and later tradition to imagine how hunger, conflict and the colony’s isolation might have led its people away from the settlement found deserted in 1590.
The novel begins the Bailie family saga through relationships that cross English and Indigenous communities. Faith offers courage and mercy, but missionary language cannot erase mistrust or colonial violence. Rather than claiming to solve the Lost Colony definitively, the story proposes one human possibility for survival, adoption and the inheritance represented by the family ring.
