Know About the Crusades gives younger readers a compact chronological account of the western expeditions to the eastern Mediterranean. Treece explains the religious appeal of crusading, the organisation of armies, the capture of Jerusalem and the establishment of the crusader states without reducing the movement to a sequence of famous battles.
The later campaigns of Richard I and the career of Saladin show how warfare, diplomacy and competing political interests complicated the original ideal. Maps and illustrations support a concise explanation of the principal leaders and turning points. The book is distinct from Treece’s longer 1962 history The Crusades, although it covers much of the same broad period.
