The Fens, autumn 1071. William the Conqueror’s army surrounds the Isle of Ely, where Hereward the Wake and other English rebels use marshland, waterways and fortified approaches to frustrate repeated Norman attacks. Tancred joins the campaign hoping to restore a reputation damaged by earlier failures, but conventional cavalry and siege methods are ill suited to a landscape controlled by boats, causeways and local knowledge.
As losses mount and morale declines, William requires a way into the rebel stronghold and Tancred is drawn into the attempt to break its defences. The military problem becomes entangled with an obligation to a former companion, carrying the action beyond Ely and into a dangerous pursuit across the Fens and northern seas. The final volume places personal loyalty and revenge against the closing phase of the conquest, when organised English resistance was being reduced to isolated strongholds and fugitives.
