The Harrowing

Northern England during the winter campaign of 1069–1070. A priest, a noblewoman, a servant, a warrior and a minstrel flee villages and estates destroyed as William’s forces suppress resistance. Travelling through burned settlements and country stripped of food, the five strangers form an uneasy group because none can survive alone. Their immediate aim is to reach the remaining English rebels, but hunger, exposure and Norman patrols make every road dangerous.

Each traveller conceals a history that affects the others’ chances of escape. Suspicion grows as past loyalties and private crimes emerge, turning the journey into a test of whether cooperation can outlast fear. Rather than following commanders or battles, the novel presents the Harrying of the North from the perspective of displaced civilians and defeated fighters. The devastation of conquest is experienced through ruined communities, famine and the loss of any reliable distinction between home, refuge and enemy territory.
