Rather than returning to famous gunfighters and outlaws, he concentrates on capable people whose practical knowledge and public service rarely became part of the frontier legend. The cattleman John Chisum is among the figures used to show how ranching, transport and local enterprise shaped western settlement.

The essays combine biography with regional history, presenting western development as the cumulative work of people who established routes, treated the sick, managed livestock and maintained isolated settlements. Schaefer's admiration for competence and endurance gives the collection its unity, although its celebratory frontier perspective is best read alongside the histories of Indigenous dispossession and environmental change that accompanied American expansion.
