The title novella follows Jess Harker, a young stagecoach driver eager to prove himself in a profession where judgement matters as much as nerve. An ambush turns his first serious test into a confrontation with fear, responsibility and the difference between bravado and courage. The accompanying stories extend the book across ranches, trails and small western communities populated by workers, drifters and settlers facing decisive moments.

Schaefer treats the West less as a theatre for gunplay than as a place where character is exposed under pressure. His protagonists must choose when to resist, when to endure and when pride has become dangerous. The collection combines coming-of-age fiction with compact portraits of labour, loneliness and moral choice on the American frontier.
