Galatea was carved from marble by Pygmalion and brought to life by a goddess. Her creator takes her as his wife and treats her beauty, dependence and miraculous origin as reasons she should embody perfect obedience. Alarmed by every sign of independent thought, he confines her under medical supervision and insists that gratitude requires submission.
Galatea conceals her strength while planning escape and protecting the daughter whose future Pygmalion also intends to control. By retelling the myth from the statue's perspective, the story turns a traditional fantasy of artistic possession into a struggle over marriage, bodily autonomy and the right of a created woman to determine what her life will become.
