Paul Morison, an American engineer travelling to England to see his mother’s birthplace, closely resembles the celebrated singer Peter Angel. When Angel asks him to take his place during a private absence, Paul agrees to a brief impersonation. Public appearances, newspaper attention and an encounter with Angel’s fiancée soon make the deception impossible to control, especially when damaging allegations attach themselves to the singer’s name.
Paul’s attempt to recover his own identity becomes a journey north through buses, theatres, country roads and improvised disguises. The novel is both a comic chase and a romance, built around the pre-television machinery of celebrity in the 1930s: live engagements, newspapers and personal appearances. Its shifting identities allow Canning to contrast manufactured fame with the freedom and companionship Paul finds while trying to escape it.
